One of the exciting attributes of the Church is that everyone has a part to play. Jesus doesn’t only save people from the consequences of sin, but also for participation in His redemptive mission. And while every believer is gifted by the Holy Spirit to serve, none are completely equipped for their assignment at the start of their journey with Christ.

With this reality as a backdrop, we’re told in Ephesians 4 that God provides leadership for the purpose of ensuring that everyone is equipped for their ministry assignment:

“And [Christ] gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11–12, ESV).

As you might expect, this equipping activity isn’t a “one size fits all,” but a combination of varied environments intended to deliver truth in the context of authentic relationships. We’re simply striving to follow the Apostle Paul’s instructions to his protege Timothy:

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:1–2, ESV).

Make no mistake! Our hope is that as you grow from the investment of others in your life, you will be eager to give away what you have received.
